Most businesses fail to connect with their audience because they’re too generic in defining their ideal customer. This leads to vague messaging that doesn’t resonate. A defined ICP makes it easier to:

  • Craft clear, targeted messaging that converts.
  • Reach your audience faster by leveraging built-in targeting.
  • Attract referrals and social proof relevant to your ICP.

Remember, likes and shares might boost your ego, but they don’t pay the bills. Instead of appealing to the masses, focus on the handful of people who are ready and able to buy from you. Ten qualified buyers are worth more than 100,000 uninterested followers.


Why You Shouldn’t Mimic Big Brands

Large companies often have subpar messaging but thrive due to brand recognition and market dominance. As a smaller business, you can’t rely on the same broad strategies.

Rather than chasing the total addressable market (TAM), focus on a smaller beachhead market—a specific subset of your TAM that you can serve exceptionally well. For example:

  • A weight-loss app like Noom may target all individuals who want to lose weight (TAM).
  • A small business might focus on women aged 30–40 who want to lose 20 pounds for a wedding in six months (beachhead market).

This approach allows you to create messaging and offers that truly resonate, leading to faster traction and growth.


How to Define Your ICP

Use this simple template to define your ICP:

I’m targeting [role/location/segment] who have [specific differentiators] and want/need [solution].

For example, as a copywriter, I targeted:

  • CMOs or VPs of marketing at marketing software companies in the US or UK who had recently raised funding and needed better sales pages and email sequences.

This specificity made it easier to craft offers, send tailored outreach, and close deals.


Key Elements of a Strong ICP

  1. Who They Are
    • Role, title, or demographic details.
    • Industry and stage (e.g., startups with Series A funding).
  2. Their Problems
    • Identify specific, urgent problems that keep them up at night.
    • Focus on causes rather than symptoms. (E.g., “I need two clients this month” is more actionable than “My business isn’t growing.”)
  3. Their Desired Transformation
    • What do they want to achieve? (E.g., $20K/month while working 5 hours/day to spend more time with family.)
    • Why does this matter to them?
  4. What’s Stopping Them
    • Are there internal blocks (e.g., mindset) or external barriers (e.g., lack of resources)?

Real-World Example

When I started as a copywriter, I sent 200 targeted emails monthly to my ICP. Out of every 100 emails, I landed four clients:

  • Two were one-time projects (~$1K each).
  • Two became ongoing retainers (~$2K/month).

This process generated $6K/month consistently because my ICP was specific: marketing leaders at funded software companies who needed better copy but weren’t satisfied with their current results.
